My husband works for a plumbing & heating place. He was asked today to go to Tampa Florida for 6-8 weeks (we live in Michigan). All expenses paid (except food). We are having a tough time making a decision. It has nothing to do with trusting each other while he’s away. We have two kids and he has never been away from them for more than a day or two. He currently makes $9 an hour, but if he agrees to go then he is going to negotiate a raise. $9 an hour is not worth leaving your family for a month and a half. Honestly, I don’t want him to be away that long, but it’s money. Plus we’re both worried because I have had some serious health issues lately. How can we get through this decision?
The only reason he is only making $9 an hour now is that he just started the job in November. I agree that if his company wants him to leave his family for 6-8 weeks, he needs to make at least $20 an hour. He does want to go because he has never been to Florida before and we are possibly moving there in 2009. But I still can’t see him doing this job down there. He said he would miss our kids terribly. And like I said……..there are no trust issues! I completely trust him and he trusts me.
My husband has been asked to go to Florida for a job?

i would not give you $9.00 for the entire state of Florida. and absents can make the heart grow fonder, but for whom??????????
He needs to tell the company he’ll go but only if they start adding more dollars to that 9 bucks an hour shit.
9 dollars an hour is not worth it. If considering it, he should negotiate first and get it in writing.
If they aren’t willing to pay him a lot more than $9.00 an hour; then there’s your answer. I’d say $15+ to move for that length of time may be worth it.
I live here in Tampa. Plenty of strip clubs to get him in trouble with .
Its 85 degrees and the chicks are whipping out the thongs. Tell him to bring his clubs, the party starts as soon as he lands!!!!!
Who needs money, we are in Florida. You aint gonna freeze, sleep on the beach!!!
u got trust issues
FL is an extremely low paying state. Keep that in mind please. The paycheck/living expense ratio is really bad. It’s cheaper to live in some Connecticut towns than FL..Just be careful. I live in Central FL, and $9 hr. is normal…isn’t that sad?
Not for 9 dollars an hour its just not worth it.
Think about it.
Don’t do it. Consider that at $9 per hour he will make about $360 per week. That is not enought money to be a part. Even if they doubled his wage it is only $720 per week. That is also not enough especially with health issues.
Sure there will be overtime but even with overtime he will have a tough time to make over $1,000 per week.
Stay at home. The money is not worth it. The only way it gets to be worth is if you think you can come out of it with something really worth while like having enough to pay for a new vehicle or a new home.
Good Luck
That’s nice he’s been considered to be given this opportunity.
You both have to decide whats more important, money of your health concerns? I’d expect to be paid twice that amount if not more to work away from home & family!! Ask if it’s negotiable & ask if the family can go too, especially if your a close nit family!
$9.00 per hour isn’t much, co’s here in my country tradesmen are getting $30.00 per hour & the basic general wage is $12.00 per hour for the lowest paid workers with no skills..
It all depends if you think it’s worth going for peanut wages
If it was worth it finacially then go for it, but it sounds as though its not.
If they were to be offering him a lump sum of money for the time then sweet. And theres nothing great about all expenses paid for, they want him to go there so they should be paying for it, including food or at least a food allowance per day.
This deal will end up costing you more. Think about it. He’s getting the same rate of pay PLUS he has to buy separate food since he’s not at home and you can’t cook for him. If he can’t cook, he will have to eat out/get fast food. So you will be paying more $$ in this time for his extra food AND he’s not even home, or getting a raise! If it’s not mandatory…DON’T DO IT.
There absolutely isn’t one single perk in this deal other than the fact that he gets to be in FL without his wife for 6-8 weeks…I would say that’s a definite NO.
I thought plumbers made more money than $9.00 an hour, I would not go for that money.. They need to make it worth his wild..
You can manage for 6-8 weeks without one another, my husband along with thousands more are deployed for 15 months at a time.. We manage and so can you..
You and the children should stay in Michigan, otherwise you will have to pay the expense of moving and uprooting the children for only a short period of time.. Do you really want to do that?
And you say that you have been having health issues, do you really want to leave your doctors who know all about you to see a new doctor and start all over again?
Do you have family or friends close by who can help you out for 6-8 weeks?
Rely upon them to help you when you need help.
Best of Luck
How do you as a family survive off 9 bucks an hour? I make more then that on Maternity and things have been a little tight. Not so much that we are living in poverty but enough that we can’t take off to the Dominican next month. When I go back, I will be making 19.71 and that is horsesh*t…I am worth more then that.
He should be making 25 plus an hour, that would be worth it for him to go away for 6-8 weeks.
The answer to your question should be no. He should not go. If you are having issues, what if something happens, and he’s gone? He needs to be where he is needed.
He can make money in town. There is no reason he needs to leave for awhile so he can make some money.
I would say no….but it would’t even be a question in my home if there no benefits. Mind you, he wouldn’t leave me alone that long anyways.
Don’t move here, this place sucks big time.Been here for 2 yrs and it is the worst place I have been. $9.00 hr will not get it done for you here, and if he loses job, pain to find another one. He wouldn’t happen to work for Ferguson.lol if so well just find out.
